STYLE & FASHION : GAP

Fall style and fashion has to be one of my favorite ones, if not THE one. Give me some layers, sweaters, jackets and nice footwear, and the creative possibilities are unlimited. Out of 1001 and more places to choose, I want to pause for a minute and talk about GAP

If you haven't been recently, stop by your local GAP. You will be pleasantly surprised. The selection is great, colors are vibrant , and - the most important - fit is fantastic.

We've talked about how to choose best skinny jeans before, and if you haven't yet, DO give GAP always skinny a try. Keep in mind this : from personal experience and many other reviews and opinions, it is a fact that GAP's different washes/styles can vary up to two sizes in fit. Just remember to grab a pair up and a pair down you usual size and I'm sure you'll come out smiling out of the store.

100 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT JEANS : Going Skinny


The world has changed when Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss invented jeans in 1873. Everyone knows historic brands like Levi's, Lee and Wrangler and terminology such as "skinny", "slim", "boyfriend", "tapered", "bootcut", "flare", etc is a part of a daily vocabulary of any fashionista. It is nearly to impossible to imagine a style conscious individual without a denim staple, and let's be honest : jeans are great - they save the day ( or night) when nothing else seems to work. These new series will be dedicated to answering the very question every woman has - how to find the best fitting jeans for your wants, needs and style.

Skinny jeans are all over the place. Some love them, some hate them, some don't care about them. And though it may sound surprising, but almost everyone can wear skinny jeans.

Just because you tried a pair of skinny jeans that you didn't like does not mean that skinnies are not for you. Nearly every modern designer - big or small - offers some sort of a version of slim fitting jeans. And here are a few things to remember when on a quest for a new pair of your faithful denims.

* don't settle for a one-time/one-pair fitting. there are as many skinny styles today as there are trees in the forest. if you didn't like fit "a" from a store/designer "n", go try a fit "b" from a place "c". in other, simpler words - go to a different place and/or try another pair. a subtle difference in the cut can make all the difference. 

* try a size up - going a little looser will make you look 10 lbs thinner. long, lean and slim is something we are all going after, right? 

* don't sacrifice quality over quantity. a pair of a good designer jeans will fit you better, last you longer and boost your confidence like there is no tomorrow. 

* don't be sold on just a "big name" : some lesser known designers often can offer an amazing fit and a better price then big well-known names. smaller brands competing with larger names often some up with some genius ideas. after all , it is all about how it looks, fits and wears, and not about who makes it. 

* stretch can be a double sided sword - it can be your best friend, or your worst enemy. look for thicker denim and two way stretch : it will allow your jeans to keep the original shape and boost your silhouette.

* try different washes. going graphite or gray can be a nice alternative to a typical blue, although a great shade of blues will aways be a classic. if choosing grays, go for medium or dark shades - deeper colors with the right fading are very flattering on and universally will take you from day to night with minute adjustments. 

* rise matters. long gone the days of the extra low-rise jeans ( and thanks heaven for that!)  mid to higher rises generally create the appearance of longer legs and smaller waist, slim the silhouette while eliminating the possibility of never desirable wardrobe malfunctions.

* experiment with lengths. from cropped to ankle to all the way long extra skinny, different lengths have different effects on the look achieved. remember, when going to all the way below the ankle bone skinny, choose a the length a little longer then typical and the ultra skinny cut: a bit of bunched up material between the calf and the ankle will balance out the hip nicely and create the illusion of an extra long leg. 

* don't underestimate the power of shoes. the right shoe will make the outfit, no secret here, but shoes are twice as important when choosing a skinny jean. pointed toe slim shoe will look beautiful with slightly cropped or ankle length jeans, while slightly rounded ballet flats add certain charm to full length ultra skinnies. Mind the height of the cropped boots - ones that fall just above the ankle bone but cut before the calf are most elongating. And a little heel will always add a dash of necessary sexy for the night out. 

The truth is that , most likely, one pair won't cover all your "skinny" needs. here are a few of my current favorites : one, two, three, four, five, six, seven  - simple, basic, but won't fail you whether you need a little confidence boost or a proven go-to for a cozy weekend.

It seems that we've been non-intentionaly matching clothes to the stroller, and I love it, because a)  my stroller is my biggest accessory,  b) stokke unique designs and colors spark up my imagination to create something new, and c) everyone involved loves it and is having fun, which is a key to a happy family, right?

I hope you all had a wonderful Mother's Day and a great weekend. 

Ours was simple and relaxing (for me). I got showered with kisses, homemade cards and bracelets, and I couldn't but tear up every time I got another kiss or hug ( those pregnancy hormones...) 

I only wish my own mother was not so far away, or it hasn't been so long since we've seen each other. Some skyping always helps, although sometimes - like yesterday - I sincerely wish that the technology made it possible to touch and hug. Those of you that live close to your family, give an extra hug to your loved ones. It is only now when I live so far that I understand why my grandmother ( who lived far from her family ) has always repeated that "the biggest blessing is to be close to your family".

But on the other hand, being away from the family makes for a tight-knit family within our little circle, so there is always something good in every situation, right?

We are up to our ears busy preparing for the Orthodox Easter ( Pascha ) that is coming up on Sunday for us. Among the services, cleanings and all other things - thought necessary and typically loved -  the stress of "musts" have caused a serious bout of my morning sickness, keeping me veeery low to the ground the last couple of weeks... Please, accept my apologies for the lack of posting lately. I am resurfacing again, and have lots to share that you will love. In all honesty, I miss you, my "blogging friends". Thank you for your support and readership.

I hope your weekend is filled with sunshine, happiness and adventures!

LES FEMME MODA the BELLY STYLE

Belly pops more each day and it calls for some looooong tees and really stretchy jeans. In my experience, I have not been able to find any maternity jeans that do not sag on the bottom ( sooo "flattering", especially "boosts" your confidence when you are pregnant...) , so some stretchy jeans size up with a "rubber band trick" have been my life-savers. I'm contemplating about the belly band, but not sure if it is worth trying - have any of you tried it? Does it really work? Did you like it if so?

All around, this got to be my favorite time - the belly is big enough that it is visible to be a "legit" preggers belly, not just extra dinner, but not SO big that you can't do anything. The baby kicks are much more visible and I know already that I am going to miss this like crazy. Any of you first time moms out there - ENJOY this time. It will pass before you know it, and - anxious as we all are to meet the new little one, this near the end time is always missed. 

The weather is beautiful outside and , fingers crossed it stays that way, I am hoping on taking everyone and all to spend a lot of time in the canyon and mountains this weekend. The blooming trees are in their perfect state right now and we need some "nature connection" time too.

One Stripe-y Birthday Afternoon...


 As we were enjoying a fabulous sunny afternoon on Nadya's 7th Birthday, I couldn't help but laugh and snatch the camera : apparently, STRIPES was something that EVERYONE wanted to wear that day. Not intentional, but accidentally matched even to our stroller blanket. 

Does this classify as tuned-in on style vibes? 

ps: for those that asked : stroller is stokke crusi in single mode , blanket is stokke ( it SNAPS onto a stroller! you will never loose it! how clever is that? ) , nadya's shoes are salt waters ( if you are on the market - most durable shoe i found. we are not going back to any other sandals)

It's been raining on and off last few days, so we ( as in me and the belly ) have been sporting the rain apparel 24/7. The spring weather here changes like no other and I am looking to the stable summer warmth and t-shirts - it is becoming more and more complicated to accommodate the 3rd trimester belly into my regular jackets, and I do refuse to buy a new one just for the sake of a month or so. Why, right?

STYLISH MOM GUIDE TO BEAUTY SECRETS: Nails

How about some beauty secrets?

After a friend commented on my good looking manicure while being a mom, I thought it would be a great topic to share. My absolute mani secret is gel nail polish.

Every woman wants to look great, but not everyone has time. When we add the word "mom" into the equation, multiply the lack of personal time by 100. A specialist at a local salon suggested that I try their newest Gel polish. She told me how great it is, wonderful, non-damaging, etc. I refused - I simply confused it with the gel nails  ( which is a completely different thing, as I discovered later).
Long story short - a year or so ago I gave in and tried the magic "shellac" ( another name, though brand was not shellac), and I never went back to regular polish since. And here is why.

Gel polish lasts at least two weeks.
Think : no chips, no mess, perfect looking "just barely out of salon" nails.  Since I am busy just like everyone else, I hardly ever change it until it starts falling off 3-4 weeks into it ( as I figured, then I don't have to even use time to remove the polish - once one nail loosens, they ALL are loose and a dab of acetone ( or remover ) makes then pop off in 30 sec)


It's non- damaging to the nails ( at least not any more then regular polish is)

I can use just the base and top coat without color in between, and use regular polish on top.
This is an awesome feature that I discovered by experimenting, and love it - should I wish to change colors , say every few days or so, just for fun - the regular polish lasts longer on top of gel topcoat ( though not as long as gel polish does), and as long as you use a NON-acetone based polish remover, you are cool to switch regular polish as much as you wish. I think this is very awesome.

Buy your own kit, 
unless, of course, you are not opposed to cashing out a good amount every 3 weeks or so. Although, to be honest, even if the price of a gel mani is 3 times more then one of the regular manicure, it also last 3 times longer, so in the long run you are not spending any more then you would , should you be the one who maintains nails weekly. I am not. For me, buying the at home kit was the best thing I've done. Initially a cost of 2 gel manicures, and I have saved hundreds by doing it all at home. Sure, crooked at first, while you are getting the hang of it, but I promise , you learn to be a pro very fast. Combined with a few other tools that one needs to have for a regular nail upkeep, which many have already on hand, and your nails looks perfect every day. For free.
* that said, I do recommend that you go to a salon at least once to see HOW it is done, and then mimic it at home. gel polish is different from the usual one - it's thicker, and seeing how the tech did it helped me personally a lot *

Here are a few thoughts on what I would have done differently.
ONE: I bought a regular UV lamp because it could cure 2 hands at the same time and was 2/3 of a price of the LED lamp ( here or here)  that could cure only one hand at a time. THE TRUTH: it's near to impossible ( at least for me when doing my own nails) to have two hands ready without messing one up. I typically end up curing at least the first coat of color on nails of one hand after another, and although 2 minutes per hand does not seem as a huge thing, I cannot tell you how many times I since wished I had an LED lamp that takes only 30 secs. 10-15 minute manicure is not that much, but 3-4 minutes would be so much better, right?!

TWO: You don't need to cash out on remover and cleanser, unless you want to. Plane acetone is 1/5 of the price and works twice as fast as a remover. Rubbing alcohol costs pennies and is the best cleanser ( gel nails will be sticky at the end and need a little rub. as i mentioned above, i highly recommend you go to a salon for the first time, if possible).

THREE: if possible, buy a kit of colors. I didn't want to spend much then, but I do wish I bought a set of color polishes over buying them one by one. Although Amazon offers GREAT prices, a set would still be even cheaper, and who doesn't want to save more, right?

Here is the process of application, if you cannot go to a salon: 

*clean and prep the nails by buffing them and shaping. the smoother the nail, the longer the polish lasts. a girl at the salon recommended washing your hands with soap prior to color application. i noticed if I do that, the polish stays on for a looooong time without peeling.

* apply the PH bond

* apply the foundation and cure under the light . this one I apply to both hands and cure for about 15-20 seconds under the UV light. If you buy LED lamp, read the instructions on the bottle - it tells you the time.

* apply the first coat of color and cure under the light. this one I apply and cure one hand at a time, with UV lamp for 2 minutes per hand ( it has a setting on it, so no timer needed :))

* apply the second coat if you want to. this one I do two hands at once - somehow second coat is easier to not mess up. curing for 2 minutes ( both hands at the same time)

* apply the top coat and cure for 2 minutes ( this one too I do 2 hands at the same time)

*rub off the sticky nails ( they are supposed to be sticky) with a cotton ball soaked in alcohol ( or cleanser).

*enjoy your perfect looking nails for nearly a month!

Seems like a lot to do , but it really is not. The only extra step you have is to rub your nails with alcohol cotton ball at the end, everything else is just regular nail color application + curing.


*if you wish to remove gel polish, use a nail file or a buffer to break the surface of the top coat, soak cotton balls in acetone or remover, apply to the nail and wrap in tin foil, plastic, or whatever else to secure it to the nails. this is the best and fastest removing technique that I have seen. leave for 10-15 minutes until you see the polish flaking off. Rub off with the nail file or a buffer and treat nails as usual.

* using a cuticle oil is a great idea always for the health of the nails.
*ps: there are many different brands of gel nail polish. i have tried shellac and harmony gelish, and both work equally well. my preference is harmony gelish - it is thinner and feels more like regular polish.

LES FEMME MODA: Belly STYLE

It's been a long while since the last style post, so how about one The Belly style? 
Pregnancy is always a "fun" time to style - not only your body changes, but your prospective on your personal appearance changes too, at least for me. I have also noticed that apart from usual "preggers" things ( like early popped belly and such), my bones are coming looser waaaaay sooner then what I expected it to be, so flats galore it is for me at this time.

Here are my current Belly Style life savers : 
stretchy jeans
looser tops 
elastic belts ( h&m belts are AWESOME! 1/2 the price of bella-band, and keeps your jeans up better!)
bright flats ( if no heels, at least fun flats make up for it, right? )  
Genius? Not at all. I am finding though that simple colors with a pop of something bright does it for me this time. And as awesome "pre-maternity, during and after" clothing is, wearing something that is non-preggers still makes me happy, even the 5th time around.

although in US it's not officially until march 22, where i grew up the first day of spring was marked on march 1st and i cannot help myself but live with that tradition. so, according to me, today is the first day of spring! and you BET we are going to celebrate this super nice weather ( thank you groundhog!) with a nice super long walk in the park during nap time ( walk for me , nap for little ones, thanks to our comfy stroller ) , a picnic after school ( yay for short school days in fridays!) and , probably, a kite flying - wind permitting.

i glanced over my ipod recently played list ( in last 2 days) and laughed. here is the mix:

EMERSON FRY'S SPRING

If you haven't heard of EMERSON FRY yet, let me introduce it to you. 

Started from fabric flower brooches and table linens, then known as EmersonMade, Emerson Fry's designer  quickly stole many girls' hearts by producing some of the most flattering, chic and modern clothing. Since launching their first clothing line, it appears that E. F. cannot keep enough stock and for a good reason. Jeans that make your legs 1000 miles long and your behind look amazing? They've got it. Timeless pieces that will be a staple in your closet and make you feel a-mazing for years and years to come? Emerson Fry got that too. And now with the introduction of their shoe line - E.F. is a firm number one on my "love it" list. Many have a girl-crush on Emerson , the designer behind the brand, myself not being an exception to it - her personality, health choices, etc resonated well with mine, and I felt that instant "kindred spirit" ( you know what I mean).  I first fell in love with , then EmesonMade, skinnies that I received on recommendation of a friend right after having a baby. Let me put it simply - I looked in the mirror and my jaw dropped as my mood lifted by 100 points, and after scoring 10 whooping compliments in 2 hours that I was out, I firmly resolved to order a pair in each color ( there were two more available) and I lived in those jeans ever since. With a name change to Emerson Fry and the addition of the new styles, the fit has only improved and my closet has benefited from a few more key pieces, shoes included. When Emerson mentioned the comfort of her 4" ankle straps, I wondered (because when you are on your feet all day long, you KNOW what a comfortable shoe means) , but she was absolutely right - most comfortable pair of shoes I've ever owned, and incredibly stylish too.  E.F.  is my ultimate go-to for an instant mood booster, whenever in doubt or for anything, really. It's an investment that is definitely worth making.

My favorites from E.F. SPRING collection (  preview here ) are the railroad line, yellow v-heel, all skirts ( aren't those minis adorable?!) and definitely her new jean line. What are your thoughts?

Witchcrafting Science


Did you have a happy Halloween?

Ours had some last minute changes. 
The two of the smurfs decided to switch to witches as they saw me pull two old costumes out of the closet when trying to find pieces for upcoming winter. 

 Those witches , particularly one, makes my days like noone else. 
Here is what I mean.

As I was TRYING to take a picture of a very sweet Nadya , a very curious witch popped into the background. WHERE she's getting it from is beyond me. I am used to a girly girl who WILL NOT compromise herself in any situation and is so proper, that I can take lessons from her. 

But not this witch:

And if you ever wondered whether witches wear anything other but striped tights, the answer is yes.
Polka dots and polka dot bloomers. 

Gotta stay on top of fashion. 


The Mad Scientist had an ever evolving costume. 
Considering that school was in the morning, we left the fun part of the hair for the evening,
which was good, because by then all the pens and probes were lost ( boys, you know) , and hair and glasses were just the right addition to make him happy.

If you follow me on instagram you saw that this scientist also has great taste in food.


I love this face - this is the most accurate capture of what I see every day. Full of concentration and radiating kindness. He still looks small here, and I love it even more because of it. 

The one and only Smurf had 3 new teeth come in right on Halloween. 
We left her to her favorite apples for most of the day, and didn't bother her with hats ( which, by the way, she HATES wearing ). The trick-or-treating magic perked her up at night and THE Smurf was up and running for the candy.

We are all smurfingly well here today. 5-toothed.


 



On the style note, 
as much as we tried to take some decent pictures for Les Femme Moda, one witch or the other kept popping up in the frame. So, here is one, and will see, if I can learn to photoshop the witches out. (Photoshop is a foreign language to me at the moment)
